Approved Equine Assisted Service (EAS) Provider Criteria
All riding establishments where horses are hired to deliver services must, by law, be licensed by the Local Authority under the Animal Welfare (Licensing of Activities Involving Animals) (England) Regulations 2018 (England) or the Riding Establishments Act 1964 (Scotland and Wales). This includes riding establishments that offer EAS.
Where service providers are delivering equine assisted therapy, practioners need to be registered registered with a recognised professional body and follow their codes of pratice. Other EAS provision (for example, equine assisted learning) is not governed by a single statutory body. To provide clients with the assurance, that EAS providers are competent to deliver the EAS, the ABRS+ conducts its own approval scheme:
- Approval as ABRS+ Approved Riding Establishment, which confirms the establishment maintains high standards for the care and welfare of horses, has appropriate arrangements in place to safeguard children and vunerable adults, has approriate insurance, and that it holds a council licence for the hire of horses.
- Registration on the HEIR with a clear description of the EAS services provided.
The size of the facility is irrelevant, and there are member establishments of all sizes, with a range of facilities. Provided they meet the required high standards of care and attention to both horse and rider, meet the membership requirements and agree to abide by the ABRS+ code of conduct, they are happily accepted as members following completion of the accreditation process.
