This week, in the spotlight is Highland Horse Fun (Newtonmore), a unique centre based in the Scottish Highlands.

We caught up with owner, Ruaridh Ormiston, to find out about the history of the centre:

Our family is the oldest breeder of Highland Ponies in Scotland as well as being credited with being the originators of Pony Trekking Holidays. The Ormiston Highland’s Breeding Stud has been in existence for over 150 years in Badenoch. We have been running Riding and Trekking Holidays in Newtonmore since 1952, so we really know how to make you most welcome. At the centre we have a Highland Pony Heritage Display dedicated to our family’s involvement with the breed over the last Century and more.

The centre offers a variety of activities for it’s clients from standard riding lessons to 5 day trail riding holidays. But a very special activity takes place in the winter at Newtonmore than definitely sets it apart from other centres.

Horse Ski Jorring is a winter sport where a person on skis is pulled by a horse (specially trained for the job!). Newtonmmore have hosted a huge range of individuals and groups, giving them the opportunity to have ago a horse ski jorring, they have even been visited by BBC TV and Radio!

The team at Highland Horse Fun do not see the Scottish weather as a limitation, and work to create activities based around the seasons. You can go for a sleigh ride in the snow during the winter and go for a glorious tour of the Cairngorms on horseback in the Summer.

The ABRS has supported Ruaridh and his team in their ventures at Newtonmore and they offer a number of the rosette awards for their clients. The rosette awards programme has also been specially adapted for ‘Ruaridh’s Wranglers’, a group of adults with learning difficulties that joins the centre for regular activities.

Thank you to Ruaridh for giving us a wonderful insight into his centre,  you can find out more about Highland Horse Fun here.
