ABRS events calendar

We will post lists of events, venues and dates online so please regularly check back to see what is going on at the ABRS.

2018 Golden Spur Awards

The Golden Spur was first awarded in 2004 and is a golden opportunity for ABRS proprietors to nominate an instructor who works in their yard.  The winning instructor will be able to demonstrate the ideal combination of enthusiasm, quality teaching and sound business sense as well being aware of the necessary issues of health and safety, child protection and have the ability to assess risk.  The standard of rider that is taught is immaterial - we are interested in the instructor's teaching ability and in keeping with the ABRS ethos this is an opportunity for a valued member of staff who may have no formal qualifications at all.

Nominations must be made by the ABRS proprietor or manager using the nomination form.  The open date for nominations is the 24th May 2018 and the closing date for nominations must be received by the ABRS Head Office will be 16th July 2018.

A panel of judges, including selected ABRS proprietors and the ABRS Chairman, will review all nominations received and shortlist five instructors to attend a final selection day on Monday, 13th August 2108 to be held at Witham Villa Riding Centre Ltd, Leicestershire, LE9 6PA with kind permission from Verity Saul, Proprietor.  These finalists will be assessed teaching a group lesson and an informal discussion on the workings of a commercial riding school and the role of an instructor.

The winning instructor will receive a trophy and a cash prize of £250 and the runner-up will receive a trophy and a cash prize of £150.  The nominating proprietor of the winning instructor will also receive a prize of £250.

This is an opportunity to acknowledge the value of a dedicated member of staff and a photo shoot and the resulting publicity could enhance the reputation of your school!

Testimonial from 2017 winner, Lauren Craggs, Finchale Riding School:

"I was really pleased to be nominated for the Golden Spur Award, and I was thrilled to win it, it meant a lot to me and also lots of my clients were very proud of me too. I enjoyed the day at Witham Villa and it was good fun teaching a new group of ladies on some nice horses.  It was lovely to be able to go to the presentation down at Newmarket and find out about a bit of the history of racing. "

Algarve Portugal - ABRS Conference Break 15th-19th October 2018

The Algarve in the south of Portugal is well known as a prime destination for holidays: golf, golden beaches, lovely climate and friendly people... and now on this trip a chance to meet some of the equestrian professionals, visit a few horses, open a bottle of wine (or two), soak up the sun....  Would you like to join us?

ABRS member Bev Gibbons has lived in the Algarve since 1972 and has always been involved in tourism and horses, starting the Pinetrees Riding Centre in 1985. A programme has been devised to give you not only a few days holiday but also some interesting demos and you can put it all down to expenses!
