• Become An ABRS+ Certified Or Approved Livery Yard

    | WHAT IS THE ABRS+ AND WHY SHOULD YOU JOIN?

The ABRS+ is the British Association of Riding Schools, Livery Yards and Equestrian Centres.

The ABRS+ is the leading organisation in the UK representing riding schools, livery yards and equestrian centres.  Founded in 1954 as the British Association of Riding Schools, it operates Britain’s longest established riding school accreditation scheme.

In 2020, the ABRS+ introduced a dedicated Livery Yard Approval Scheme to support livery yard owners.  This scheme provides professional representation, practical membership benefits and a recognised mark of quality.  Approved yards can clearly show that they maintain high standards of horse care, facilities and client safety, helping them attract new clients and strengthen their reputation within the equestrian industry.

The ABRS+ is run by experienced yard owners and equestrian professionals who understand the everyday demands of managing a livery yard or riding establishment.  Membership is open to livery yards of all sizes and disciplines, and there is no requirement to operate as a riding school to take part in the scheme.

    Did you know?

If you are an existing ABRS+ approved riding establishment you can add Certified Livery Yard membership for just an additional £25.

Joining the ABRS+ demonstrates to clients that your yard offers excellent facilities, strong welfare standards and a clear commitment to health and safety. It gives horse owners confidence that their horses are receiving the best possible care.

  • Certified and Approved Livery Yard Criteria

Livery yards can join the ABRS+ as Certified or Approved members.

Certified Livery Yard status is available through self-certification. Yards complete the ABRS+ membership application and provide supporting documents to show they meet the required standards. Once accepted, they may use the title Certified Livery Yard.

Yards can also choose to become an Approved Livery Yard. Approval involves an accreditation visit, offering independent assurance that the yard meets ABRS+ criteria. Certified yards can request an upgrade to Approved status at any time.

Because every yard is different, ABRS+ assesses each application on a case-by-case basis. Criteria and accreditation requirements are adapted to reflect the facilities, services and type of livery offered. This guidance document outlines the evidence and considerations used during accreditation.

How else can membership benefit me?

ABRS+ membership connects you to a strong professional network within the UK equestrian industry. As a member of British Equestrian, the ABRS+ represents livery yard and riding school owners at a national level, ensuring your views are heard by industry bodies and government.

Because we are a small and agile team, our core staff not only visit livery yards and riding centres but also represent members at British Equestrian meetings. This means we can actively pass on your feedback, concerns, and suggestions, giving your yard a voice in shaping the future of the industry.

Membership also helps you attract new clients. All new members benefit from a mini marketing campaign to promote your yard and highlight your Certified or Approved status, helping you stand out from the competition in your local area.

Our aim is to build a supportive community of yard owners committed to raising standards across the livery sector. Membership encourages best practice, improves client expectations, and prepares the industry for any future changes such as potential livery yard licensing.

By joining, you are investing in a better, safer, and more professional future for your yard and the wider industry.

Members enjoy a range of exclusive benefits, including Full Membership to Equestrian Employers Association worth £42.50, Free standard listing on Livery List worth £30 or discount on enhanced listings.  This alone is worth £79.50.

You will also be eligible to access trade prices on Gallop products, allowing significant savings on everyday essentials for your yard or to resell them to your own client base, creating a new income stream for your business.

As a member, you will enjoy networking opportunities, and discounts with our partner companies, plus reduced rates for conferences and workshops, ready-to-use templates and resources in our members-only area, national advertising and editorial exposure when we work with the media or attend events, and priority access to webinars along with our regular newsletter.

Our team is on the end of the phone to provide support, coaching and advice for any specific challenges you face, helping you run a safer, more professional, and successful yard.  We are also available for advisory visits and can come to your yard in person whenever you need expert guidance.
