As we come to the close of another year, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on the work of ABRS+ over the past twelve months and to look ahead with confidence to what lies ahead.
This year has been one of continued delivery, engagement and forward thinking for ABRS+. We have remained focused on supporting our member schools, upholding standards, and providing a strong professional network as the sector continues to evolve.
A central theme for ABRS+ this year has been equine wellbeing and the future sustainability of riding schools, and this was brought together most clearly through the ABRS+ Conference 2025, Equine Wellbeing at the Heart of Riding Schools and the Riding School Futures Project.
The conference brought together schools, professionals and partners to explore how placing equine wellbeing at the centre of practice supports both horses and businesses. These conversations directly informed and aligned with the Riding School Futures Project, which is fully funded by the British Equestrian Federation (BEF). The Futures Project builds on the same principles, supporting schools to explore new ways of working, adapt to change, and plan for long-term sustainability while keeping horse welfare at the core of decision-making. We are extremely grateful to the BEF for their support in making this work possible.
Alongside this, we have seen a huge uptake in funded CIEC courses, encouraged partly by the BEF Bursary funding. This reflects a strong appetite for learning and development across the ABRS+ network and highlights members’ commitment to developing high standards and investing in the future of their schools.
The ABRS were at the International Horse Trials in August 2024 for the first time on the stand hosted by Horse Scotland and shared with World Horse Welfare and the Pony Club. Interest in all the organisations was high with Members visiting us to collect a complimentary gift of rosettes.
In response to changing needs within the industry, ABRS+ has also launched a new tier of membership for Equine Assisted Services (EAS). This new category supports schools delivering or transitioning into equine assisted work and will be accompanied by a new range of rosettes to support delivery in this area.
There are many reasons this new membership is being taken up. For some schools, EAS provides a way to find a new role for their horses with an income stream supporting children and adults with a wide range of challenges. For others, it may represents a complete shift in focus as horses and ponies reach retirement age and centre owners look to evolve their businesses while continuing to prioritise horse welfare. ABRS+ is already supporting schools through this transition, helping them explore best practice, understand the requirements of EAS, and make the most of the opportunities this work can offer. Schools interested in finding out more are encouraged to get in touch to explore how ABRS+ can support them.
At the recent AGM we announced the winners in the Rosette and Certificate Leagues for the year ending March 31st 2025. Tutsham Academy won the Rosette League with four schools tying for second place, Brookhouse Farm Riding School, Ryders Farm Equestrian Centre, Rudyard Equestrian Centre and Blewbury Riding and Training Centre with Larton Riding Schools third. Well done to all participants. For the tests South Weylands won the League, with Horse Rangers Association second and Follifoot Park Riding Centre third. Three were highly commended, Foxhills Riding Centre, Trenance Riding Stables and Gartmore Riding School. Again well done to all participants.
While this year has been about maintaining momentum and laying strong foundations, we are firmly focused on the future. In January 2026, the Board and Executives will come together for a strategy meeting to develop a new three year plan for ABRS+. This will help ensure the organisation remains responsive, relevant and well positioned to support its members in the years ahead. Next year we are planning to hold at least one Regional Workshop as well as the Annual Conference.
Looking forward, interestingly 2026 will be the Chinese Year of the Horse, a theme that symbolises energy, movement and renewed focus. It offers an exciting opportunity for ABRS+ and our schools to embrace fresh ideas and renewed ambition.
To support this, we will be offering webinar coaching sessions early in the new year, designed to help schools kick-start the Year of the Horse with confidence. These sessions will focus on practical support, motivation and achievable goal-setting. Keep an eye on our Facebook page and newsletter for further details and updates.
I would like to thank the ABRS+ Board and Executives, volunteers, partners and member schools for their continued commitment and engagement throughout the year. Your support and dedication are central to everything ABRS+ does. I should like to wish you all a very happy Christmas and much success in the New Year.
As Chair, I look forward to working together as we move towards 2026, developing our new year plan, and building momentum for a strong and successful Chinese Year of the Horse.
