Many members will have heard discussion about “Benedict’s Law”, the new allergy and anaphylaxis framework being introduced for schools in England from September 2026.
It is important to understand that this is primarily aimed at schools and educational settings. Most independent riding schools operating purely as commercial leisure businesses are unlikely to fall directly within the statutory scope.
However, riding schools may be affected where they:
In those situations, centres may be expected to support school allergy-management arrangements, including emergency procedures and staff awareness training.
Even where Benedict’s Law does not directly apply, expectations around allergy and anaphylaxis management are increasing across all child-focused activities. Riding schools should therefore consider whether they have:
The equestrian environment presents some additional considerations, including insect stings, food provision at camps, remote hacking routes, and the management of emergency medication during off-site activities.
ABRS+ has produced a template Allergy & Anaphylaxis Policy for riding schools and equestrian centres. This is available in the Members Area here: ABRS+ Client Management Resources
The template is intended to help riding schools adopt a proportionate and practical approach focused primarily on severe allergies and the risk of anaphylaxis rather than minor everyday sensitivities.
Members should also be aware that first aid training requirements are likely to evolve as Benedict’s Law is implemented. It is anticipated that first aid and outdoor first aid courses will progressively incorporate additional allergy and anaphylaxis content. In the meantime, riding schools should consider appropriate top-up training for relevant staff.
To support members, ABRS+ has arranged with the First Aid Training Co-Operative for a short online allergy and anaphylaxis awareness course to be developed specifically for equestrian settings. ABRS+ members will receive a discounted course fee.
The course is currently in development and further information will be circulated to members once delivery arrangements are finalised.
